What do you think most people begin drinking more of when they give up diet soda or regular soda?

indigo asked:

With all this talk about diet soda actually causing weight gain and regular soda being loaded with sugar, what are most people drinking in its place when they give it up?

if they’re worried about health in general or weight loss, then just water or tea. I know, not nearly as tasty as soda, but they’re also pretty much the only healthy things you can drink besides juice (which is very often loaded with sugar). You could also try drinking carbonated water if the carbonation in sodas is what you like.

Lose weight now – Stay slim forever

Well, I have given up soda for over 3 weeks now.
In place, I drink water, water, water, and more water!
I have milk, 1 glass, 5 days a week or more. I try to drink 1 glass everyday, but some days I forget.
Sometimes I drink 1 serving of fruit juice.
And other times I get sick of water so I put Crystal Light Powder in it.
Personally, I hate tea, but I’ve heard it helps with weight loss.
[the kind without loads of sugar.]

    Need to lose weight?

I started a weight loss program and gave up my one pop a day by finding flavored sparkling water. It tatses like pop, but is water with 0 calories. Found mine at Walmart. Hope this helps!

I replaced it with the flavored, carbonated water. Since I did not care for the carbonation, I would fill half of my glass with plain filtered water and the other half with the flavored, as that would eliminate the bubbles. As the flavored water became more expensive, I would put in less and less until I eventually weaned myself from it. However, I did get in the habit of putting lemon juice and sweetener in my water. After I learned of my pregnancy, I weaned myself from that, thinking that the sweetener was not good for my baby. Well, I was still drinking about one diet cola a day by then, too. I cut back to just two or three a week (I switched to caffeine free diet sodas) to none. Now, I don’t even care for soda, except for the occasional diet Sierra Mist, which is what I drank when I had bad heartburn if the vanilla soy milk and/or the Tums weren’t effective and I didn’t feel like suffering through it.

Now, on occasion I do drink an all-natural root beer, but not often as they do contain unnecessary calories and cost more money than soda.

For the most part I drink coffee (during my pregnancy, I went to full caf daily to half decaf, half regular two or three times a week, now that my nursing daughter is four months old, I’m back to full caf daily), plain filtered water and vanilla and chocolate soy milk and the occasional half of a bottle of beer. (Pre-pregnancy I would drink about three bottles about every other week, now I just split one with my husband for the taste. Occasionally, I can have a whole one but I don’t do any more than that as my daughter is still nursing every two to two and a half hours.)

I found it easier to replace with ice tea at first. I really didn’t like water. Then someone told me to get a big styrofoam cup like at Sonic packed with ice and water use a lid and straw until you got use to the taste of water. After a few weeks of this trick I actually love water and carry a steel water bottle with me all the time.

Well the reason that diet soda is bad for you is because of the artificial sweetener it contains. So drinking crystal light or any other sweet calorie free flavored water is basically defeating the purpose.

The only thing you can really do is drink water or tea and use REAL sugar but only a little like make homemade iced tea or regular tea. A lot of high quality teas like Revolution Tea have amazing flavor so you wouldnt need much sugar.

Also try putting cucumbers or lemons/ in your water or making homemade sugarless smoothies. Milk is also really filling and good.
